Have you fallen head over heels for one of my wallpaper murals…but wondering how to remove wallpaper when you’re done with it?  Worried it’ll take you days to get it down?  Or that you’ll ruin the wall underneath (maybe pulling the paint or sheetrock right off)?

Let me teach you how to take down wallpaper in this video tutorial.  My DIY removable wallpaper easily pulls off in minutes without damage to your walls, so it’s perfect for renters or those who like to redecorate often.  You can also follow the step-by-step instructions below.

How to Take Down Wallpaper

All of the wallpaper murals I sell are removable and reusable!  The easiest way to remove wallpaper later is to prep walls properly now.

Hang this temporary wallpaper over:

  • Latex paint that has cured (dried) for at least 30 days.  Eggshell, pearl, satin or semi-gloss finishes are all suitable.  Matte finish latex paint makes it difficult to install but will not affect the removability.
  • Oil based primer that has dried for 3 days.
  • Zinsser BIN Lacquer Sealer that has dried for 1 hour.
  • NEVER hang this wallpaper over regular latex primer.

If you prepare your walls this way first, you can just grab each panel from the bottom and peel off wallpaper.  It’s dry strippable wallpaper, meaning you don’t need to add water, gels or natural solutions to take off wallpaper.

That being said, it’s a very heavy duty wallpaper that will stay on your walls for years without falling off the wall.

Why Does Wallpaper Damage Walls?

If you’ve ever had experience with stubborn wallpaper – the kind that pulls the top layer of your drywall off leaving patches that need to be repaired – you might be wondering why this happens.

This is usually because the wall wasn’t prepped properly first.  If you add wallpaper paste over paint that isn’t fully cured, the paint and the paste “fuses” together.  When you try to remove wallpaper later, it doesn’t want to let go of the paint.

This is why it’s so important to follow my painting guidelines above.

Michelle messaged me asking how to remove wallpaper she bought from me several years earlier.  Her daughter outgrew the Tree of Life Wall Mural and was ready to redecorate.

After watching my “How To Take Off Wallpaper” video tutorial, she tried it herself and documented her project on Instagram.
